Focus on the working requirement
Hard chrome is an engineering coating used for suitable wear surfaces and dimensional restoration. The deposit, substrate and final finish must be considered together.
Distinguish coating families
Appearance-led nickel-chrome and functional hard chrome serve different purposes. A historical description should not treat every bright chromium finish as the same engineering process.
Evaluate process changes carefully
Conventional hard chrome plating uses hexavalent chromium bath chemistry. Specialised functional trivalent processes are also commercially available. Availability does not establish widespread adoption, equal performance for every application, or the bath chemistry used at DVS.
Ask for evidence relevant to the part
Share the base material, component drawing, working area, dimensions, coating requirement and inspection criteria. Suitability and the finishing route must be agreed for the actual component. A historical name, date or milestone is not a substitute for current process and inspection evidence; this article makes no unsupported inventor attribution.
