Aviation Surface Treatments: Qualification and Coating Selection

Technical information for component finishing, plating and engineering requirements.

Work from the component requirements

For aviation work, the approved material, process and inspection specification govern the route. A general coating description does not establish approval for a flight-critical part.

Compare alternatives with evidence

Conventional and specialised alternative processes need application-specific review. Do not assume functional trivalent chrome, HVOF or another process automatically meets every aviation standard or eliminates all hazards.

Separate contact and wear functions

Electrical contact performance and mechanical wear resistance are different requirements. Specify the actual function rather than selecting hard chrome as a universal conductive finish.

Check supplier approval separately

Confirm any required process accreditation, customer approval and traceability. This overview does not establish DVS aviation accreditation, customer approval or documented flight-hardware work.
